How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches In Your Saratoga Springs Home

Have you ever stopped to think about cockroaches? Most people haven’t. This is probably because cockroaches are generally boring unless they are directly in front of you, and in that case, “thinking” about them isn’t usually our first reaction. We are here today to tell you, you should think about cockroaches, at least a little. To help you do this, here are some things to consider and some helpful tips to get these pests out of your home, if they invade.

What Are Cockroaches?

Cockroaches are insects that consume things other creatures do not. Some of the weirdest things these pests eat are toenails, ear wax, saliva, paper, glue, soap, and paste. They will also eat pretty much anything we eat, including cake, sandwiches, candy, and steak. In short, cockroaches are nature’s trash can.

Our Saratoga Springs service area is home to a few different species of roaches. The most common roach that lives in our area and invades homes is the German cockroach. Identify this pest by its ½ to ⅝” long light-brown to tan body, six legs, two long antennae, and two distinct parallel marks located just behind its head.

How Cockroaches Get Into Area Homes

An adult cockroach can run at 3.4 miles per hour or 50 of its body lengths per second. These pests can also climb up walls and even cling upside down on ceilings. Most scary is that they transition from floors to walls to ceilings without breaking speed. To get inside, these pests crawl on the exterior of a home, looking for cracks, gaps, and other openings. Most often they find these along foundations, near windows/doors, and through siding. Sometimes roaches find their way indoors through sewer connections. This means there is a chance these pests will crawl into your living areas through one of your toilets.

The Dangers Of Cockroaches

All cockroaches are dangerous. The German cockroach, in particular, spreads 33 different kinds of bacteria, 7 human pathogens, and 6 parasitic worms. When inside, they spread these sickness vectors through their fecal matter and their dirty bodies. The scary thing is that the organisms they spread are microscopic. This means if you leave food out on the counter and don’t know roaches nibbled on it during the night, there will be no way to know that it will make you sick.

Prevention Tips For Roaches

If you do not currently have roaches living inside your Saratoga Springs home, now is the time to take precautions to keep them out. Here are some practical ways to do this around your property.

  • Eliminate sources of water build-up and use a dehumidifier to keep interior areas dry.
  • Thoroughly wipe down surfaces throughout your home once a day.
  • Vacuum regularly.
  • Clean beneath large kitchen appliances and furniture.
  • Seal gaps and cracks found in your home’s exterior foundation.
  • Make sure your home’s window/door screens, door sweeps, and weatherstripping are in good condition.
  • Reduce the clutter in and around your home.
  • Keep up with your lawn and landscaping.
