Bees / Wasps

There are many species of stinging insects, all differing in color, size, and temperament. All stinging insects have a stinger that extends from the end of the abdomen used to inject venom into their insect prey to paralyze them or as a means of defense.

Though stinging insects are valuable to the ecosystem by pollinating plants, trees, and crops, it also can’t be argued that these pests pose a threat to people and our pets when in our yards. Their stings are not only painful but can trigger serious and sometimes life-threatening allergic reactions. Having them nesting and foraging for food in our yards and near our homes is dangerous, and their nests should always be removed by a professional.

Wasps, bees, yellow jackets, and hornets live throughout Utah and are regular, unwanted visitors in our yards and sometimes our homes. They are attracted to and will make themselves at home on any property that offers them sheltered nesting spots and easy access to food. While stinging insects typically nest outside, it is not unheard of for them to exploit an opening in a home and move inside to build a nest, usually behind a wall void, in a vent, or inside a chimney.

If you see many stinging insects buzzing around your yard, flower beds, gardens, or near your home, you should take immediate action to get rid of them. The more stinging insect activity present, the more likely a sting will occur.

The list below will provide you with some helpful tips to prevent stinging insects from taking over your Utah property:

  • Keep lids on trash containers and recycling bins to keep foraging stinging insects out of them.
  • Cut back tree branches and shrubs from your home’s exterior.
  • Seal spaces in your exterior walls and gaps around windows and doors to keep these pests out of your home.
  • Reduce the amount of flowering vegetation on your property, especially any planted close to your entrances.
  • Regularly inspect things like grills, handrails, and play structures for stinging insect nests.
  • Many bees and wasps nest on or in the ground. Always wear shoes when walking through your yard to avoid an accidental sting.
  • Wear gloves when working in the garden.
