Spiders

Spiders are arachnids that hunt and feed on other living things, including insects and other spiders. Any property providing them with access to food is a place they will want to call home, and they are regular visitors to our outdoor and indoor spaces.

Spiders live worldwide in various habitats, including wooded areas, rainforests, jungles, and of course, our backyards! While most species of spiders live outside and far away from humans, many live close to people choosing our yards, homes, garages, and barns as a place to call home and hunt for prey.

Most of the spiders we find in our homes are harmless, such as hobo spiders, wolf spiders, yellow sac spiders, and jumping spiders. Unfortunately, two species that live in the United States do pose a threat to people, and they live in our region. The black widow spider and brown recluse spider are examples of spiders that have venom strong enough to cause health concerns.

Properties with lots of insect activity will also have to deal with large populations of spiders. Things found in most of our yards that will attract insects and spiders include trash cans, gardens, pet food, grills, outdoor eating areas, standing water, and outdoor light fixtures. It is very common for insects living in your yard to move into your home eventually, and when they do, spiders will follow. Now your home not only has an insect problem, but a spider problem as well!

The list below will provide you with some helpful tips to prevent spiders from taking over your Utah property:

  • Partner with Avenge Pest Control and put into place a year-round pest control plan.
  • Reduce areas of overgrown vegetation, remove yard debris, and get rid of standing water from your property to make it less attractive to insects and spiders.
  • Keep lids on trash cans and recycling bins to keep insects out of them.
  • Regularly walk around and inspect the outside of your homes, repairing any cracks you find in the foundation or exterior walls.
  • Repair worn door trim or weatherstripping.
  • Remove standing water from your property that will attract both insects and spiders.
  • Maintain gardens on your property and keep shrubs and bushes cut back from your home’s exterior.
